Because Grandpa played the violin, my mom felt it right that I follow in Grandpa’s footsteps. I knew back then that I was musically inclined, but there were more exciting things to do besides attending to my violin lessons. Anyway, it is such a complicated instrument and its mastery requires hours and hours of practice. When Grandpa died, I was still taking the violin lessons albeit grudgingly. Grandma made sure that I got his violin although I failed to realize the value of her gesture at that time.
Eventually, I quit the violin lessons before I could learn how to play it well. When Mom learned that one of my cousins began playing the violin, she decided to give Grandpa’s violin to her. Time passed and aging seemed to have rekindled my interest in violin music. Then, as an adult with my own money to spend, I resolved to take violin lessons once more. I scouted around for violins for sale because I didn’t want to rent one. I then realized that violins cost much, something that I never gave much importance to when I was taking violin lessons as a child.
To my dismay, a number of the violins for sale had not been well cared for and getting them back in shape would create a hole in my pocket. My sister had the bright idea that I should contact my cousin to ask if she was still using Grandpa’s violin. After sometime, I got hold of my cousin and she said that after playing Grandpa’s violin for several years, she had to stop because of other immediate concerns. She was kind enough to offer it to me but she wanted me to return it to her sometime in the future. We agreed to meet so I could get the violin.
I was so pleased to find that it was in a much better condition than the violins for sale I had previously looked at. Surely Grandpa did not pay much for it, but its craftsmanship was superior to most new models. My cousin came carrying two cases. One was Grandpa’s and the other was a violin she had used when she was first learning to play. Her mother allowed her to play Grandpa’s violin only when she was old enough not to break it. My cousin said she wanted to sell her own violin and thought I might want to see it first before she includes it in the “for sale” list. Seeing that the instrument was in nice form and since her price seems reasonable, I immediately paid for it. I came home with not one but two violins. It felt so good to hold and play the very same instrument that Grandpa had played many, many years ago. My only regret is not continuing the lessons otherwise I could have played better much earlier.
